Attention Anglers! I’m putting together a hosted trip for bonefish in the area off Los Roques Venezuela for June 2013. My good friend and fellow guide Emiliano went up there last year, and the photos and stories he came back with provided more than enough motivation for me to move this particular destination right up to the top of my list of must-do’s. The idea is to rent a couple of sailing yachts, complete with crew and chefs, and do a ten day trip with seven full days of fishing plus spectacular food, snorkeling, and scenery all the way. (Non fishing guests are welcome too) Cost is only $500 a day per person, and includes everything except a guide (since it is a hosted trip), but from what Emiliano tells me if you’ve got any fish spotting and casting skills at all you can do just fine on your own! We’ll make sure guides are available though, for anyone who wants one (even maybe just for the first couple of days until your eyes get turned on) and these run about another $175 a day per angler.
I’ve got ten total spots to fill and only three or four of those are left open at this time. Flights will need to be through Caracas to Los Roques, and I’ll be waiting for you when you get off the international flight so we can travel together from there on. Our plan is to board the yachts the same day we arrive, then sail through the night so as to get out to the fishing grounds and beautiful islands and beaches straight away.
We’ll determine the exact dates for the trip once the group is filled out so we make sure they work for everyone. Anybody interested shoot me an email right away; I don’t expect this deal to last long!
Patagonia Unlimited is pleased to announce a new program starting with the 2012/13 season: Birds of Patagonia. This is the culmination of a long-term project which has been several years in the making, combining our existing infrastructure for trip planning and area-logistics with the knowledge and expertise of two of Argentina’s most renowned ornithologists, María Pía Floria and Javier De Leonardis. Pía and Javier have been conducting research and guiding birders in Argentina for many years, and have extensive knowledge of the diverse range of environments and observation sites we now use to conduct tours with access to nearly 300 species of birds. Lodging for these programs is provided in the quaint Andean town of Trevelin, situated at the gates of Los Alerces National Park, and the programs include birding excursions in a variety of local area environments ranging from Arid Patagonian Steppe, to Lush Wetlands, to High Ancient Forests and even the Rocky Andes themselves.

Lago Strobel (aka Jurassic Lake) has become famous the world over in recent years for its incredible rainbow fishery, sporting perhaps the greatest abundance of trout over ten pounds per acre of water anywhere on Earth. Patagonia Unlimited offers both week and half-week itineraries to fish this incredible system including the Rio Barrancoso, Lago Strobel‟s only tributary and a beautiful river-fishery in and of itself, as well as fifteen smaller but equally productive inner estancia lakes open every year from November 1st through May 1st.
Sight fishing with dry flies is a commonly adopted and effective approach to these waters, and guests choose daily between wading and fishing from a driftboat or raft. Lodging for our Lago Strobel itineraries is provided in an extremely comfortable shoreline estancia, complete with 24 hour windgenerated electricity and hot water, satellite internet and telephone , a full bar, and executive chef prepared meals, allowing for an exceptional level of comfort in this remote region of Santa Cruz. Flights for this itinerary arrive in and depart from Calafate daily (4 hours drive from the estancia), and the rates are all inclusive from the time of your pickup at the airport to the time of your drop off for the flight home.
